His Directions for TORONTO
Nuclear risks posed to City of Toronto by Ontario's nuclear plants
(Bruce, Darlington & Pickering)
He might be the only candidate running in TORONTO MAYORALTY RACE whose written presentation to CNSC for closing of almost 50 years old Pickering station was received on June 28, 2018. He has made numerous presentations to the CNSC against refurbishment of Pickering & Darlington and nuclear waste storage in a deep geological site near the shores of Lake Huron at Bruce.

If elected, Chai would like to push to decommission our leaky 50 years old Pickering nuclear station with the help of workers who are familiar with its ins and out and not add additional risks to any fresh water lake communities. Chai supports a much cheaper option of a long term contract with Quebec hydro electric power over existing hydro-lines.  On the other hand, decommissioning nuclear plants and using the labour force knowledgeable about the plants to do it is a better use of the talented and experienced human resources to safeguard all Lake Ontario communities. Our safety must have precedence over our comfort and greed promoted by the profit hungry energy producers.

All nuclear plants [Bruce, Darlington & Pickering] pose a risk to Great Lakes waters if a serious accident happens like in Fukushima [which is still not fixed after 7 years]. These plants have been leaking unreported radioactivity into Atlantic Ocean for decades.  That is why these plants were built on great lakes and not on a remote lake where all leaks will stay stored.
If one of these plants suffer from an unexpected major event like in Fukushima then Southern Ontario and Quebec residents will face immediate drinking water challenges for centuries. Unfortunately this may also include 5 major metropolitan  Canadian cities: Hamilton, Toronto, Kingston, Montreal and Quebec City.

Chai Kalevar promotes progressive gas tax. Cars should be taxed by weight and horsepower of the car so as to conserve the Earth's limited capacity for holding carbon dioxide and judicious use of cars by Canadians who have a Carbon footprint larger than Americans. Many ask him "How will you do that?"

Each car would have a transmitting chip with its weight and HP recorded  that would be received by the gas station which will have a receiving chip and an approved tax table. By doing so, people would be discouraged from using big and powerful cars unnecessarily.  These revenues can be used for increasing accessible transit, which will draw more drivers into public transit. This may increase the road capacity by reducing the number and size of cars. It will also ensure more room for safe bicycling lanes and sidewalks. May be even trees and bushes.

The future of our planet is more secure with less cars and smaller cars. This will also make room for more secure bike lanes with a healthier population in active transportation. The challenges our planet faces can be addressed through these measures, one does not know now if they are in time or too late but they will definitely give us more lead time.
Yes FORD NATION this will reduce our OHIP costs too!

As a GREEN mayor with a not so green council, Chai is in a difficult position to promise any political program on issues that divide council (47 or 25). As a graduate engineer & MBA, he may be able to formulate new options that could put City Council on a path to recover from the current gridlock that the council has experienced. The Progressive Gas Tax when implemented may give Canada, provinces and cities additional funds for transit thus lowering Canadian Carbon footprints. Needless to act the logic of Progressive Gas Tax is global in scope and can be applied in all countries equally.

Chai Kalevar, as a green mayor, may be able to persuade higher level of governments [Ontario or/and Canada] to get on with the Progressive Gas Tax and help reduce the Carbon load of Ontarians & Canadians on the planet. If followed by other countries then it may begin to lower the heating of our already globally warmed up planet.

When we were in school and introduced to Arctic circle, I thought of it as a land full of ice and snow, but this summer there were forest fires above the arctic circle. I hope that is a wake up call to all but the people whose mind is made up does not matter what are the facts? It is our task to wake them up NOW!
